How to play Invaders

Forty invaders come down the screen in five rows of eight. Your ship fires on its own, so the whole game is where you put it. You have three ships, four bunkers, and capsules to catch on the way.

The rules

Ten things. Three of them only show when they cost you.

  1. Move

Drag a finger anywhere on the board and the ship follows it. You can also hold the on-screen ◀ and ▶ buttons, or the arrow keys, or A and D. Left and right held together cancel out.

  2. You fire on your own

There is no fire button. The ship shoots whenever it can. Three of your shots can be in the air at once, with a short wait between them, so a wasted shot still costs you.

  3. The march

The formation steps sideways. At the edge it drops a row and turns round. Every invader you shoot makes the rest step faster.

  4. Points

An invader in the back row is 30 points. The two middle rows are 20 and the two front rows are 10. A shot always hits the lowest invader in its path.

  5. Bombs

The lowest invader in a column drops them, and at most four are falling at once. One that lands on you costs a ship. Everything stops for about a second and a half, then you are back in the middle.

  6. Bunkers

Four bunkers stand between you and the formation. Every shot that hits one takes a piece out of it, yours as well as theirs. Invaders that get low enough grind through them. Bunkers are never rebuilt.

  7. Capsules

On average one invader in twelve drops a capsule when you shoot it. Only one capsule falls at a time. Catch it for 25 points and a power: T fires three shots side by side, R lets six shots fly and halves the wait, S takes one hit for you, F freezes the formation, and ♥ is another ship, up to five. T, R, S and F last about ten seconds.

  8. The saucer

A saucer crosses the top of the screen about every 25 seconds. Shooting it pays 50, 100, 150 or 300 points, chosen at random, and it drops a capsule unless one is already falling.

  9. Waves

Clear all forty and you bank 100 points. The next wave starts lower and moves faster. Your bunkers keep their damage and your powers keep running.

  10. How a run ends

You lose your last ship. Or the formation reaches your row, which ends the run at once however many ships are left. A run also stops after 15,000 ticks of the game clock, which is about fifteen minutes.

One wave

What a full wave is worth.

Two middle rows: 16 invaders at 20320
Two front rows: 16 invaders at 10160

Saucers and capsules come on top of that. A saucer is 50 to 300 and every capsule you catch is 25, whether or not you needed its power.

A freeze is the best time to shoot. The formation stops marching and stops dropping new bombs, but bombs already in the air keep falling, your shots still land, and the saucer still flies.

People ask

Ships, capsules and bunkers.

How many lives do you get in Invaders?
Three ships. A bomb that lands takes one. The extra-ship capsule gives one back, up to a limit of five. If the formation reaches your row the run ends at once, however many ships are left.
Is there a fire button?
No. The ship fires on its own. You only steer: drag a finger on the board, hold the on-screen arrows, or use the arrow keys or A and D.
What do the capsules do?
T fires three shots side by side. R lets six shots fly at once and halves the wait between them. S takes one hit for you. F stops the formation marching and dropping new bombs. The heart is another ship. The first four last about ten seconds, and every capsule caught is 25 points.
Which invaders are worth the most?
The back row, at 30 points each. The two middle rows are 20 and the two front rows are 10. A full wave is 720 points, plus 100 for clearing it.
Do the bunkers come back?
No. Each bunker loses a piece to every shot that hits it, yours included, and the damage carries over from wave to wave. They are never rebuilt during a run.
