How to play Solitaire

This is Klondike: seven columns, four foundations, one deck. One card is turned at a time. You can go through the deck as often as you like, but it costs you. And you move cards by tapping them, not dragging.

The rules

Nine things. You know most of them. The scoring is ours.

  1. The deal

Fifty-two cards. Seven columns hold one to seven cards each, with only the top card of each face up. The other 24 cards are the deck.

  2. Build the columns down

A card goes on a card one rank higher and of the other colour: a red 6 on a black 7. Face-up cards that sit in order move together, and you can lift the whole run or only the lower part of it.

  3. Empty columns

Only a King, or a run that starts with a King, can go into an empty column.

  4. Foundations

Four of them, one for each suit. Each is built up in order from the Ace to the King.

  5. The deck

Tap the deck to turn one card onto the pile beside it. The top card of that pile is the one you can play. When the deck runs out, tap it again to turn the pile back over. You can do that as often as you like, at 20 points a time.

  6. Tap, do not drag

Tap a card to lift it, then tap where it goes. Tap the lifted card a second time to send it straight to its foundation. The Send up button plays every card that can go to a foundation, one after another.

  7. Taking a card back

The top card of a foundation can come back down onto a column. It costs 15 points, which is more than the 10 it earned going up.

  8. Scoring

Ten for each card that reaches a foundation. Five each time a face-down card is turned up. Minus 15 for a card taken back, minus 20 for turning the pile over, and 250 for getting all four suits home. There is no clock and nothing for speed. A run cannot finish below zero.

  9. How a run ends

All four suits are home. Or the deck and the pile are both empty and nothing on the table can move. Or you tap End run, and tap again to confirm, which banks the score you have. A run also stops after 5,000 moves.

One move

A run moves, and a card turns up.

Before. Tap the 9♦ to lift it and the 8♣ with it. Then tap the 10♣.
After. The run sits on the black 10 and the card underneath turns face up: 5 points.

The 8♣ alone could not have made that move. A black 8 does not go on a black 10. It had to travel with the red 9.

Now tap the deck. If it turns an Ace, tap the Ace twice and it goes to its foundation for 10. That is 15 points, and the reason a clean win is 875: 520 for the 52 cards, 105 for the 21 cards that start face down, and 250 for going out.

People ask

The deck, the redeals and the score.

Is this draw one or draw three?
Draw one. Each tap on the deck turns a single card, so every card in the deck can be reached on every pass.
How many times can you go through the deck?
As many as you like. But each time you turn the pile back over it costs 20 points, so a game that redeals again and again can finish on nothing.
How is Solitaire scored here?
10 points for each card that reaches a foundation and 5 each time a face-down card is turned up. Taking a card back off a foundation costs 15 and turning the pile over costs 20. Getting all four suits home adds 250.
What is the best possible score in Solitaire?
875. That is 520 for the 52 cards, 105 for turning up the 21 cards that start face down, and 250 for going out, with no redeals and nothing taken back.
Can you drag the cards?
No. Tap a card to lift it, then tap where it should go. Tapping the lifted card a second time sends it straight to its foundation, and the Send up button plays every card that can go there.
